• Full release version of Windows Server Migration Tools update lets you migrate Hyper-V and RRAS

The full release version of the Windows Server 2008 R2 Migration Utilities is now available. The update allows you to use the Windows Server Migration Tools-a set of Windows PowerShell cmdlets that shipped with Windows Server 2008 R2- to migrate Hyper-V and RRAS. And the detailed guides that take you through Hyper-V and RRAS migration, one step at a time, are now complete and live as well.

Full release versions of other guides (for migrations that do not require the Tools) have also gone live. Check out the Windows Server Update Services 3.0 SP2 Migration Guide, and guides for the other role services of Network Policy and Access Services (NPAS), Health Registration Authority and Network Policy Server....

  • Announcing NVSPBind

John Howard: A quick post to announce the availability of a new utility written by a colleague of mine in the Hyper-V team, Keith Mange. NVSPBind (Network Virtual Service Provider Bind) overcomes a shortfall that many people hit in server core installations of Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2 and Microsoft Hyper-V Server.

In a full installation of Windows, it is possible to enable or disable protocols from a network adapter using the network connections applet in the control panel (aka ncpl.cpl) by simply checking or unchecking protocols as necessary....

  • Hyper-V Manager

Jerry Orman: Wrote this tool when I was setting up my laptop to run Hyper-V.  I didn't want to have to open the Hyper-V manager and have a window running all the time, and was planning on using Remote Desktop Client to connect to the VM's so I could map drives and copy/paste in teh VMs.  The idea was to have something that sits in the System Tray that allows you to Start, Stop, Save State, and Pause the VMs running on the box....

  • Offline Virtual Machine Servicing Tool v2.1

Virtualization affects how we plan, build, deploy, operate, and service workloads.  Customers are creating large libraries of virtual machines containing various configurations.  The patch-state of these virtual machines are not always known.  Ensuring that offline virtual machines are properly patched and won’t become vulnerable the instant they come online is critical.

The Offline Virtual Machine Servicing Tool 2.1 has free, tested guidance and automated tools to help customers keep their virtualized machines updated, without introducing vulnerabilities into their IT infrastructure. ...

  • Tool: VHDCopy and VMProv

Dilip Naik, a former Microsoft employee, awarded as Most Valuable Professional (MVP) in the File Systems and Storage category, recently released a couple of interesting tools for Hyper-V: VMProv and VHDCopy.

VHDCopy is a patent-pending command line utility that significantly reduce the time required to copy large virtual hard drives files by skipping unnecessary portions of data (like the hibernation file) inside the VHD itself.
It only works with offline VMs and fixed VHD files up to 148GB that are formatted with NTFS.

Naik claims it performs 2x-10x faster than other copy operations, like the System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM) check-in/check-out operation or the manual copy command performed by an admin, by reducing the disk I/O operations from 20% to 90%.

VMProv is another patent-pending command line utility that works with VHDCopy, allowing the administrator to use the virtual machine while VHDCopy is still performing the copy operation.
Every operation made during this timeframe is managed by a mini file system filter driver that will apply the changes to the copied VHD file as soon as the copy ends.

Both tools are in beta right now and available here.

  • HyperV_Mon: a new free tool if you use Hyper-V

Tim Mangan: If you use Hyper-V, or any OS virtualization platform, you know that you can't trust the Windows Task Manager from inside the VMs to tell you squat.  Basically, the virtualization layer pulls the rug out from under the guest OS when it comes to CPU and the guest is clueless and assumes that whatever was paused just ate CPU the whole time.

I was looking at a performance issue on Hyper-V and needed to investigate.  Searching the web I found Perfmon info but got sick of setting that up, and then having to do paper and pencil math to figure out what I wanted to know.  So I did what I always do -- I wrote a tool!  The tool is called HyperV_Mon and is basically a GUI that does all the hard work for you. ...
