Configure Hyper-V Remote Management in seconds

Announcing "HVRemote"...., a tool to "automagically" configure Hyper-V Remote Management. (Amazing what can be done with a few days vacation to kill before you lose them at the end of the year....).

I'm not going into the gory detail here as I've created a PDF containing the documentation, and a site on http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/HVRemote where you can download the tool and the documentation. All I ask, is that if you find the tool useful, drop me an email or a comment. Thanks!

What does the tool do: It reduces the manual configuration steps needed for Hyper-V Remote Management that I blogged about back in March this year 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 down to one or two commands.

  • It can configure Full installations and Server Core Installations of Windows Server 2008 with the Hyper-V role enabled, plus configure Microsoft Hyper-V Server. It runs across all locales (I've tested English and Japanese) and it doesn't matter if the server is domain or workgroup joined.
  • It can configure Vista SP1 and Server 2008 configured with the Hyper-V Remote Management tools. Again, doesn't matter if the client is domain or workgroup joined.

SCVMM VNext info

Rakesh Malhotra: The team is already hard at work on the next release to align with the Windows Server 2008 R2 hypervisor update. Like this release, there will be a short gap between the platform update and the management update but we'll align the releases as close as possible (incidentally, the reason it takes us a little extra time is because once the platform has shipped and everything is "locked", we still need to run through a final battery of tests and stabilization just to make sure everything works as advertised). As we showed back in September, Live Migration will make it's debut in Windows Server 2008 R2 and SCVMM VNext will take advantage of that feature in addition to all of the other new functionality going into the R2 release.

An "R2" server release isn't as large of an incremental update as compared to a completely new major release version of the server OS. This tends to make it easier to adopt since the retesting/certification of applications effort can be more scoped. Of course, if you're using Hyper-V strictly as a virtual machine host and running business applications inside of virtual machines, it will be very straightforward to upgrade to 2K8 R2 since the applications will be isolated from the hypervisor OS update. SCVMM 2008 already supports the VMware VMotion feature directly and indirectly via PRO so adding live migration support isn't going to "change the game" if you will. The key thing we'll continue to invest in and improve is providing the best possible application knowledge so that you know *when* to execute a live migration, *which* applications need calibration and *what" that calibration should be. The beauty of PRO is that it is fully extensible and we can continue to provider a richer experience with improved knowledge incrementally between major and minor updates to SCVMM. On top of that, we're not doing it alone - our partners are coming to market with PRO enabled management packs for System Center so stay tuned for more news on that front.

Hyper-V 2.0 Feature overview

Posted By Bink on October 27 2008, 9:05 AM with 6 comments
Filed under: ,

Windows Server 2008 R2 will include Hyper-V 2.0, it promises to deliver the final pieces for enterprise level OS virtualization (together with SCVMM2008) and to really compete with VMware at that level.

Live Migration

The most anticipated is of course Live Migration: moving running VM's from one host to another without interruption of services running inside the VM's

To accomplisch this technique a new shared filesytem is needed and so will also be introduced in Hyper-V 2.0: Clustered Shared Volumes.

The Live migration works best together with System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008, it can provide additional Live Migration management and orchestration scenarios such as Live Migration via policy.

Cool thing is you only need to update to Hyper-V 2.0, none of the rest of the infractructere needs updating.

Logical Processor Support

  • Support for 32 logical processors on host computer
  • Twice the initial supported number of logical processors of Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V

Hot add remove storage

  • Add and remove VHD and pass-through disks to a running VM without requiring a reboot.
  • Hot-add/remove disk only applies to VHDs and pass-through disks attached to the SCSI controller (not the IDE controller)
  • Hot-add remove of storage controllers is not supported

Benefits

  • Enables storage growth in VMs without downtime
  • Enables additional datacenter backup scenarios

SLAT

Second Level Translation (SLAT)

Overview

  • Leverage new processor features to improve performance and reduce load on Windows Hypervisor
  • AMD: Enhanced Page Tables
  • Intel: Nested Page Tables
  • Benefits
  • Improved memory management performance
  • Memory usage of Windows Hypervisor will decrease from approximately 5% to 1% of total physical memory.
  • More memory will be available for child partitions enabling higher consolidation ratios

Dynamic Memory

Overview

  • Pool of memory is dynamically distributed across VMs
  • Memory is dynamically allocated/removed based VM usage with no service interruption

Benefits

  • Enables much higher consolidation ratios per host by addressing the greatest limiting factor to consolidation: Memory

How

  • VM memory configuration includes:
  • Initial (what VM will boot with)
  • Minimum (what VM is guaranteed)
  • Maximum (what VM can grow to)
  • Memory is added via Hot-Add MEM functionality
  • Memory is removed via Balloon driver (supported OSs)

!!NOTE:The Dynamic Memory feature, will not be available as a part of the Beta for WS08 R2.  Microsoft is still evaluating options to make this feature available as a part of RC/RTM of WS08 R2. So let's hope this won't be killed before release.

Boot from VHD

Allows any VHD to work on physical hardware, this is very interesting! Boot an OS VHD on your physical hardware.

Input from Hyper-v.nu:

New functionality can be expected on the network layer. Improved support for stateless and statefull offload technologies will improve the speed of iSCSI storage communication. We also expect support for multiple network channels (NIC teaming support), analogous to already existing support in Windows Server 2008 for MPIO (MultiPath I/O) for SAN path redundancy.

Finally the time is there to introduce Virtualized I/O, a technology allowing multiple operating systems in different virtual machines, to share a single PCI Express device. An application could be the introduction of virtual hostbus adapters (HBA) within virtual machines so a direct mapping can be made to a physical HBA in the host. This allows for better SAN support and similar management of LUN's and zoning as is required in the physical storage world. An analogy with virtual NIC's can be made as implemented in Hyper-V.

BE AWARE: Microsoft will release an emergency security patch today!!

Posted By Bink on October 23 2008, 12:36 PM with no comments
Filed under: ,

Microsoft notified me that they will release an emergency security patch later today.

Thursday October 23rd, 17:00 GMT (That is 19:00 for GMT+1+summertime)

All Microsoft said is that the vulnerability can be remotely exploited by malware.

Microsoft advices every Windows user / administrator to update their machines

Every currently supported Windows version is affected, so:

Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Vista, Windows 2008, 2008 Core.

I'm not sure if all editions are affected, but it does look like it, so also Windows Embedded? Windows CE ? 2008 Core installation? Hyper-V Server?

To my knowlegde this is only the second time that Microsoft has released an out of band security patch.

UPDATE: now posted: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms08-oct.mspx

Update2: I could not get Hyper-V server confirmed, all they could say at this time is "All Supported Windows Versions"

    Hyper-V failover-cluster hotfix now public

Posted By Bink on September 26 2008, 3:23 PM with no comments
    Filed under: ,

Increased functionality and virtual machine control in the Windows Server 2008 Failover Cluster Management console for the Hyper-V role

This article describes the increased functionality and virtual machine control in the Windows Server 2008 Failover Cluster Management console for the Hyper-V role.

This update incorporates changes in the way that the Windows Server 2008 Failover Cluster Management console functions for the Hyper-V role. These changes provide increased functionality and virtual machine controls that are consistent with the Hyper-V Manager console.

This update changes the Failover Cluster Management console (the Cluadmin.msc file) and the server components of the failover cluster. If this update is installed on one node, it should be installed on all nodes of a Windows Server 2008 failover cluster. It may be installed on one node at a time. However, we recommend having all the nodes updated in a reasonable time. You may experience errors on a Failover Cluster Manager that has not been updated to a failover cluster that has had this update applied. These errors occur because of differences between the non-updated Cluadmin.msc file and the updated failover cluster.

This update can be installed on Windows Server 2008-based servers that are running Windows Failover Cluster, on Windows Server 2008-based servers that have the Failover Cluster Tools installed, and on Windows Vista-based computers that have the Windows Server 2008 Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT) installed. If the package is installed on a Windows Vista-based computer that does not have the Windows Server 2008 RSAT installed, the installation will be unsuccessful. This will indicate that the package is not applicable.

Changes to the virtual machine view
The Failover Cluster Management console customizes the controls and actions that are available in the actions pane. Before you install this update, the actions for virtual computers are "online" and "offline." After you install this update, the actions for virtual computers are "start," "stop," "shutdown," and "turnoff."
    Changes to virtual machine actions
Before you install this update, the actions pane shows the Quick Migrate Virtual Machines option and the Move Service or Applications option to move virtual machines. The Quick Migrate Virtual Machines option causes the virtual machine to use the "save state" shutdown option before you move the virtual machines. The Move Service or Applications option causes the virtual machines to shut down by using the "offline action" setting that is part of each virtual machine’s resource properties. After you install this update, the only action in the Failover Cluster Management console for the Hyper-V role is Move Virtual Machines. This action causes each virtual machine that is in the running state to move by using the "save state" shutdown option. If the virtual machine is not in the running state, it does not have to be shut down, and its state will not change during the move.

Note If you use the move group command in the Cluster.exe utility, online virtual machines will move by using the "offline action" setting. The behavior of the move group command does not change with this update.
Allow for more than one virtual machine in a "Services or Applications" group
Before you install this update, only one virtual machine can be selected in the High Availability Wizard. Additionally, there is no method that you can use to add a virtual machine to a Services or Applications group by using the Failover Cluster Management console.

After you install this update, the Failover Cluster Management console allows for more than one virtual machine. The High Availability Role Wizard for virtual machines identifies virtual machines that have files on the same disk and enables those virtual machines to be configured for High Availability. Therefore, the virtual machines will be in the same Services and Applications group. If the Services and Applications group moves to another node, all the virtual machines in that group are also moved.

If there is more than one virtual machine in a group, you may receive the following error message when you try to manage those virtual machines from System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008:
    Unsupported Cluster configuration.
SCVMM does not support managing virtual machines if there is more than one virtual machine in a group.
Add support for mount points or volumes without a drive letter
Before you install this update, volumes are not detected automatically. The Failover Cluster disk resource that uses the mount point or GUID instead of a drive letter must be manually moved to the same Services or Applications group as virtual machine resources.

After you install this update, the High Availability Wizard can detect when files for a virtual machine are on a volume that is using a mount point or a GUID instead of a drive letter. Additionally, the High Availability Wizard moves the appropriate disks into the same Service or Application group as the virtual machine resource.
Changes to the virtual machine refresh action
Before you install this update, the refresh action causes only one virtual machine to be refreshed. Any other virtual machines that are in the same Services or Applications group are not refreshed.

After you install this update, a refresh of a virtual machine in a group refreshes all the virtual machines in that group.
Behavior changes if any node of the failover cluster has a disconnected virtual machine
Before you install this update, if one or more of the nodes in a failover cluster has a virtual machine that is disconnected, you receive the following error message in the Failover Cluster Manager High Availability Wizard:
An error was encountered while loading the list of available virtual machine. Value cannot be null. Parameter name: managementObject.
Then, the wizard exits. The Hyper-V Manager console lets virtual machine Virtual Hard Disk (VHD) files reside on removable storage. However, if that removable storage is removed, the state of the virtual machine is disconnected. Therefore, you receive the error message in the High Availability Wizard, and then the wizard exits.

After you install this update, this issue is corrected, and the error message is removed.
Behavior change when you add a pass-through disk to a virtual machine
Before you install this update, when you add a pass-through disk to a virtual machine that is already a failover cluster resource, and the disk is located on a different failover cluster node than the virtual machine, the status in the Failover Cluster Management console shows that the configuration change is successful. However, the configuration change is not successful.

After you install this update, the Failover Cluster Management console correctly shows that the configuration change is not successful.

Note To correct the configuration problem, the physical disk resource for the pass-through disk should be moved to the failover cluster node that hosts the virtual machine. This should be done before it is added to the configuration of that virtual machine.
Behavior change when the parent differencing disk is not on shared storage
Differencing disks have parent and child relationships. When a differencing disk is configured, a parent disk is specified, and that parent VHD is required to be available for the child differencing disk to function. The parent and child VHDs must be on disks that are in the same Services or Applications group as the virtual machine resource.

Before you install this update, if the parent disk is not located correctly, the virtual machine may not start because not all the VHDs are located on the same failover cluster node. This update detects the location of the parent VHD and provides a warning if the parent VHD is not on a disk that is configured for shared storage.

    Volume path copy
This update lets the path of a storage volume to be copied from the properties of the disk resource in the Failover Cluster Manager console. When you configure a virtual machine, the paths of the volumes must be specified for the disks that will be used. After you apply this update, the path can be copied from the properties of the disk in the Failover Cluster Manager console. This is useful when the path is very long, such as when a volume uses a GUID instead of a drive letter..

Lieberman Software Provides First Privileged Account Password Management Solution for the Hyper-V Environment

Posted By Bink on September 23 2008, 2:45 PM with no comments
    Filed under: ,

Responding to the growth of virtualization deployments in the enterprise, and the need for applications that support this environment, Lieberman Software announced that Random Password Manager is now certified for Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V. It is the first privileged password management solution to achieve this distinction.

By supporting Hyper-V, Random Password Manager can automatically update every local administrator password on virtual Windows servers in the enterprise. The products entire feature set - including delegated firecall password recovery workflows, hardware encryption capability, FIPS 140-2 certification, and logging of all password operations - are now fully functional in virtual environments.

According to Gartner research, shared account password management tools will be used by more than 50% of large enterprises by year end 2010.1 This estimate, coupled with the financial benefits of virtualization technology, demonstrates the market growth potential for solutions that secure privileged account passwords in the virtual environment.

Server virtualization technology lowers IT costs and improves the manageability of the network server environment. It combines the workloads of multiple servers onto one system, significantly increasing processing power in the network while reducing the amount of physical servers that must be maintained. Hyper-V is an appropriate virtualization option for Windows-centric infrastructures due to its integration with the x64-bit version of the Windows Server 2008 operating system.

Our enterprise customers are leveraging virtualization technology for its benefits of reducing costs, freeing up data center space, and simplifying overall IT management operations, said Chris Stoneff, product manager of Lieberman Software. Lieberman Software shares this vision, but we also recognize the imperative of securing virtual systems. Random Password Manager does this by frequently updating, securely storing, and auditing recovery of the privileged account passwords on virtual machines.

Random Password Manager is the third Lieberman Software application certified for Hyper-V. These certifications allow the company to offer a full portfolio of security management solutions for the Windows server virtualization environment.

Excelent tp from Mark Harrison! :

I am now using Windows Server 2008 as my primary laptop with Hyper-V (Link ) ... I now have a partial solution to this problem.

You can have Hyper-V installed but not started by the following registry setting:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\hvboot]"Start"=dword:00000003

Now, when I start my laptop i have full access to the power management fucntionality.

If I need to demo a VM, I can start Hyper-V with the command

    net start hvboot

Power management is then disabled again until the next reboot.

Hyper-V and VHD Performance - Dynamic vs. Fixed

Posted By Bink on September 22 2008, 10:31 PM with no comments
    Filed under: , , ,

With the recent release of Hyper-V, customers are starting to ask us how to configure Hyper-V to get the best performance.  It’s generally recognized that there is overheard running a virtualized environment, but the question that really needs to be answered is how much?

With this in mind, I thought I’d share some of our recent testing of Hyper-V and how disk workloads perform when using Fixed or Dynamic VHDs.  The goal here is to provide some data that backs up the tuning guidance that can be here: http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/system/sysperf/Perf_tun_srv.mspx.

The following graph shows the relative performances for a number of different scenarios (with Dynamic VHD being the baseline).

Hyper-V VHD Performance - Dynamic vs. Fixed

Fixed VHD always performs better than a Dynamic VHD in most scenarios by roughly 10% to 15% with the exception of 4k writes, where Fixed VHD performs significantly better.

Dealing with MAC Address Pool Duplication in Hyper-V

How VLANs work at a high level, the system requirements, how to configure VLAN support, and an example of how you can use VLAN tagging between hosts for quick isolated subnet tests.

Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V provides support for using Virtual LANs (VLANs) on the parent and child partitions (host and virtual machines). This article explains how VLANs work at a high level, system requirements for the infrastructure to support VLAN tagged packets, how to configure VLAN support for the parent and child partitions, and an example of how you can use VLAN tagging between hosts for quick isolated subnet tests.

The IEEE 802.1Q standard for VLAN tagging was created to simply allow you to take a physical network connection and transmit multiple streams of network traffic. Each stream is virtually isolated from each other so that a machine on VLAN1 and a machine on VLAN2 cannot see each other’s packets unless there is a router connected to both VLANs and is performing routing between the VLANs. The diagram on the left below shows that a single physical network cable can have multiple VLANs flowing through it as well as non-VLAN traffic, this is referred to as “trunking”. While the diagram on the left is the conceptual view of the traffic isolation, the diagram on the right shows that the packets are part of a stream and that only the computer that is part of the same VLAN can see the packets on that VLAN and that a computer without a VLAN ID cannot see any packets that are part of a VLAN.

Microsoft has validated its Hyper-V virtualisation technology to handle 24 cores as Intel starts to ship its six-core 7400 Series Xeons

The validation was necessary as the Xeon 7400 series is the world's first 6-core processor, therefore enabling quad-socket systems to offer 24 cores in a single system.

Bob Visse, a Windows server senior director at Microsoft told IT PRO at an event in Prague today that Intel and Microsoft had been working together on optimising their products for virtualisation and that particular progress had been made on power savings.

“One of the things we did with
